Remember how in primary school, the popular nickname for “foodies” was F.F.O (For food only)? No one wanted to be called that, but how come now, most people want to identify as a foodie?
A little disclaimer: With food, I listen, but don't might judge.
Now, I find it a bit concerning when people say things like, “Food is the way to my heart.”
Food? The way to your heart? Are you on some ‘Esau mission,’ selling your birthright for a bowl of stew?🌚
But hey, if it really is the way to your heart, I totally get it. After all, it's food–hopefully good food–we're talking about.
Well, for me, good food—to have and to eat—is a blessing. I have a healthy appetite, but on most days, that’s where the excitement stops, except I have some intense craving. And trust me, I have some very weird cravings at weird times.
When I was younger, I was ridiculously picky. I went from being a chubby baby to a slim child in no time. As an adult, a few months away from my mid twenties, I’m still underweight.
On food blogs.
I’m not one to rave about the latest cuisine or take food bloggers too seriously. Those claiming to make “low-budget meals” but somehow always have “leftover” goat meat or turkey?
XYZ kitchen, be for real!
Don’t get me wrong; I enjoy food blogs now and then, but only to get better at dishes I’m already familiar with. They’ll never convince me to try out some of those bizarre combos. Nope, not happening.
I’m a typical ‘bush girl’ from Ekiti state. But I'm not the biggest pounded yam fan.
If you were to invite me out for some bougie fine dining, we could skip the international cuisine altogether and stick to rice or pasta (Nigerian recipe).
No, don't buy me shawarma. I’ll pass on the pizza you're offering, as well as the burger. Tell them not to put hotdogs in my food. Am I too much?
I’m not a fan of eating swallow when I’m out, although I can compromise on amala. Give me something I recognize, and we’re good to go.
Why complicate things when our local varieties hit just right, especially with the perfect protein to round them out? Don't get me wrong, I appreciate a well-made dish, sure, but I’m not exactly queuing up to sample what I can’t pronounce so I could send streaks on snapchat.
Funny enough, some foods I didn’t like back then, now hold a special place in my heart. Take oats, for instance. I used to give it the major side-eye, but now—with a lot of evaporated milk—it has become a fave.
Meat pie is another one. I used to think it was meh, but now when properly made–flaky crust, savory filling and all, the taste is heavenly. And salad! Who would’ve thought? But these days, it's starting to grow on me.
At the end of the day, there’s something comforting about enjoying food on your own terms without the pressure to follow every trend.
Controversial‼️
My favorite Nigerian swallow is semo (don’t roll your eyes at me). I see that hate on socials, and I wonder, “why are you not a lover of a good thing?” Honestly, I think the hate is unnecessary!
(P.S: I can’t trust anyone caught in a semo propaganda with my heart).
What else? Oh, yeah. The weirdest thing I tasted was peppered snake. It could easily pass for fish. Although it was a onetime thing, but it wasn't so bad.
On my hot amala date…
So, what about the title?
It wasn’t clickbait, in case you're wondering. I actually went on an amala date with my friend, to this newly opened abula spot—and trust me, the food, the place, my company…everything was amazing! It was the best I’ve had in a while.
Would have added a few photos from that day on here, but this piece wasn't so much about the date than it was about my food rant haha.
Last thing. In all thy doing, don’t be a glutton. Observe that fast, eat healthy, and exercise. Be a good steward of your body and health, and have a swell day. 💛
Hey, my lovely readers.
We are currently at 500+ subs, and I just want to say THANK YOU. I might have a Christmas-themed romantic fiction I’ve been writing, and hopefully it sees the light of day. But no promises. Either way, the holiday will be special for you, in Jesus’ name.
Don’t forget to leave a comment. See you in December. 💌
Yours in Quality Time,
Adebola.🦋
Drop the story abeg.
Also, I think we are food twins in the pizza and sharwama part. I do not eat those. As for meat pie, I still don't eat that. Then I also like salad now if you're talking about the plain old cabbage, carrot and mayo.
Also, I hate the semo propaganda. I won't trust such people with my heart too.
My dia, people that always have left over turkey and goat meat even plantain, I am sorry but I can never relate because what do you mean, shey something that will finish the same day I buy it or the the next morning.😭
